PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU CONTACT US:

DISCLAIMER

Homeless To Independence Inc. is a 501©3 non-profit organization. We are self supporting and we do NOT receive any government grant funding what-so-ever to pay bills for anyone in any situation. We do not give away money. We do not give out loans against any money.

This ministry is supported with generous financial donations that are used to help keep us functioning. Our purpose is to help supply individuals and families with personal needs such as food, toiletries, clothing, household items, furniture and baby/adult diapers/wipes both locally and to areas effected by disasters . At this time, we do not offer any shelter or transitional housing services. Again, we DO NOT pay any bills. We DO NOT pay any rents or mortgages.

If you are actually homeless, or about to be homeless or need emergency assistance of any kind, DIAL “211” from a land-line telephone. This will not work from a cell telephone. Tell the receiver your situation and what you need. They will give you information specific for the location you are currently in plus any referrals you may need. They have the most up to the minute information for your specific area. Dialing “211” will get you help and much more info than this office can provide. Homeless to Independence wants you to have all the information you need to get through the situation you are in.

Don’t have a land-line telephone??? Go to your local police department, library, or house of worship and ask to use their land-line telephone. They may even make the call on your behalf.

OCCASIONALLY, THERE WILL BE ARTICLES BY OTHER WRITERS. HOMELESS TO INDEPENDENCE MAY NOT NECESSARILY AGREE WITH THEIR VIEWPOINTS, BUT WE DO RESPECT THEM. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION!

OFFICE CONTACT INFO:

Welcome to the Green Book Online! – 311

Dear Friends:

For nearly a century, the Green Book has kept New Yorkers informed about the agencies, offices, boards, and commissions that keep our dynamic City running. This year, to complement the traditional printed edition, we are proud to publish the first truly “green” Green Book-a searchable, up-to-date City directory in digital form.

Enhancing our government’s online presence and providing real-time information to New Yorkers is a central goal of our Road Map for the Digital City, a report we released last year. Innovative customer-service initiatives, such as 311 Online, have already made more government information more accessible, allowing New Yorkers to get City news faster and easier than ever before. The digital Green Book is another tool New Yorkers can use to more easily interact with government, and more easily find the information and resources they need.

In our ever-more interconnected world, information technology has become essential to civic engagement. It has transformed how New Yorkers share ideas with one another, with elected officials, and with people across the globe. We are determined to provide the most responsive, most sustainable, and most forward-thinking government possible. This directory is the latest example of our commitment to that goal, and I invite you to use the new Green Book-in its digital form, which is available at nyc.gov

Sincerely,

Mayor

NEW YORK SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

The NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) prohibition is officially repealed!
After 26 years, New York State has repealed its ban on incarcerated people receiving TAP grants.

Reinstating TAP supports incarcerated people’s access to education. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that less than 5% of incarcerated Americans are college-educated. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, nearly 70% of incarcerated individuals want to pursue higher education.

Reinstating TAP can increase opportunities for people of color who are disproportionately negatively impacted by the criminal legal system.

The Institute is recruiting students for the summer session of HSE (High School Equivalency) Connect.
Funded by the Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity, HSE Connect collaborates with the John the Institute and the Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC).

In addition, the Institute supports participants in applying to MEOC and provides case management services for non-academic issues like housing, employment, and public benefits. Participants can enroll year-round and be placed in the appropriate class based on a placement exam.

After completing their HSE diploma, HSE Connect students can connect with the Institute’s college access and professional development programs and MEOC’s career training and academic programs.

HSE Connect is currently recruiting for the summer session, which begins in July. If you are interested in joining HSE Connect or learning more, click here to complete the form. The Coordinator of Intake Services will contact you within three business days. NOW – POSITIVE EMPLOYMENT SEARCHING

In order to be considered by a prospective employer, first impressions ARE the most important! Get a haircut, fresh clothes, and shower – Make your BEST effort to make your BEST impression!!! There are agencies to help you with clothes. Even if you are homeless at this point in time, you can get a fresh shower at a shelter in your area. There ARE other housing options in the county and you can do it!

*********************************************

Please follow these suggestions:

• First have your resume prepared. There are libraries that will do them free of charge. Provide honest information.
• Next I would like to discuss the application. I strongly suggest for you to pick up a paper application, fill it out totally! This will be your “Cheat Sheet” and will show your prospective employer that you are organized and ready. Pulling 50-million sheets of paper out of your pocket while filling out an application looks BAD! DO NOT ABBREVIATE! Do NOT even abbreviate “New Jersey”. Do NOT leave any space blank; if the requested
information does not apply to you simply put “N/A” in that block. Apply as a responsible, dependable and employable person.
• Have all of your identification ready.
• Choose your references carefully also. Now that you have made positive changes, I strongly suggest that you offer people that know and have witnessed your new lifestyle.
• Do not be afraid to offer certificates of accomplishment such as computer classes, parenting classes, first aid classes, etc.
• Have your interview clothes ready the night before and take a fresh shower in the morning. (I am, at this time, working on barbers and salons that will donate haircuts. More information to come as I make those arrangements).
• Always keep in prayer. No matter what, life can only get better as long as you choose to make the positive changes to change your own life.
